This last weekend I was very fortunate to co-host a seascapes and landscape photography workshop with David Rogers. We had a great bunch of enthusiastic photographers, and everyone seemed to get on rather well!
We left Friday morning and got there around 3, and after dropping off our luggage headed to Kassiesbaai, a little fishing village within walking distance of the hotel. The village characterised by its lime-washed and thatched houses was full of interesting details, and characters. We then headed off to scout out a good location for our morning photography, to catch the sunrise.
Saturday morning started with a wake-up call at 4:30 and more landscape photography! We packed up our camera equipment and headed out to catch the sunrise at the spots we had found the evening before. The wind was gale force, and cameras were getting covered in seaspray, which reminds me I need to wash off my tripod, but everyone seemed to persevere, and we all seemed to come away with some breath taking spots.
After a brief stop off at the hotel we then headed out again to Struisbaai for some lunch and then to Cape Agulhas for a sunset shoot. There was a very interesting shipwreck, which was going to be the main subject for our shot.
Once the sun had gone down everyone headed off back to the hotel, but instead Dave, Derrick and myself hung back, and with a bit of direction from Dave we were able to light up the shipwreck with the headlights of the car to get a rather outstanding result.
Once we got back to the hotel, we had a late dinner and then discussed plans for the following day, we decided another 4:30 start, and a trip back to the cliffs was in order, but the enthusiasm wasn’t as great as the first morning!
The following morning at 4:30, we received another wake-up call for even more landscape photography, but were greeted with a slight rain! No problem, because the hotel had umbrellas, so we loaded the car up with camera equipment and umbrellas, and the small group of us, headed out! I’m glad we headed out again because we all got some really awesome shots, in totally different locations to the morning before.
Breakfast followed, then we all got together for a final slideshow, we said our goodbye and we all headed for home.
It was a fantastic weekend, and I got some terrific images. When you see the results, suddenly waking up at 4:30 makes sense.
