My brother has been studying at Capsicum Culinary Studio for almost two years, and this year he has been studying patisserie. Their end of year function this year was a high tea, with a mad hatter theme. I was asked if I would document the whole event.
I arrived about an hour before the rest of the guests, which gave me enough time to shoot the tables full of cakes, macaroons and savoury nibbles. There was a huge a spread.
There was so much on offer to eat. The eats ranged from different types of macaroons to mini cakes, to muffins. There was also a lot of savoury eats like blue cheese balls rolled in a spicy paprika type of spice, as well as mini quiches. All the food was laid out on different tables around the studio.
It was nice doing some work for Capsicum. Their lecturer, Anso Brink, had no specific shots she was after. The only shots she needed was the ice tea which was a sponsor for the afternoon.
I’ve always quite enjoyed photographing food. Being able to get behind-the-scenes in the kitchen was great. Shooting the future chefs, hard at work plating up, and adding the finishing touches to the various cakes, sandwiches and other eats. There was always time for them to get their backstage selfies!
As the event was a mad hatter’s tea party, the invite stated that you were to wear a hat. Some people came in conservative peak caps. Others came in massive top hats and one person even came in a sombrero.
All-in-all I think everyone there enjoyed themselves, and I left happy with the shots I had taken.
